Why should you care?

WHY CARE?

Everyone is passionate about something, whether it's the forests, the fishponds, or the oceans. We are all connected, like water flowing from the tips of the clouds to the salty water below. Here in Hawaii Hawaiians have a cultural history with the seas, it's their provider, provider of food, fun, and life. Within the sea there's the reef, the coral reef but today it's not the same. Public and political influence has taken place, pollution levels have skyrocketed and our reefs are dying.. Everywhere. The increase in pollution has caused the corals to become bleached, diseased, or swamped by invasive. A loss of our reef means a loss of culture, our shorelines, of uniqueness that Hawaii has, of recreational practices because there will be no reefs to snorkel in. Tourism could decrease because there will be no more diving for there will be so little to see. This would impact our lives politically, economically, socially, and culturally. Little that can be taken to ensure a sustainable future for our reefs is necessary. We want everyone to enjoy the reefs for generations to come. So you should care simply for the better of nature, your family, and our island.

WHY CARE?

My Interests

I care about this issue because I grew up on this beach, my grandparents live on this beach and I grew up snorkeling in these waters with my dad. I have an emotional connection to this beach that not many others have.  To convince others I will need to tap into their emotional connections because this beach is a popular location to have parties because of the large open park. It is also a popular destination to swim but once people are aware of the reef dying then hopefully they will begin to care more if they want their children to have fun with their kids at the same place they did. Once people in the community understand what's happening then maybe they will start working together to help their beach out of respect and care.  Malama Pupukea has done work at sharks cove in their beach and it has shown promising results, this was because everyone had a similar goal and knew what had to be done to ensure a better future. I hope the same can happen at Ali’i beach.
