Scientists at NOAA learned that coral bleaching is caused by damage or stress onto the coral. Elements that can cause stress to the coral is temperature, light, and nutrients. The stress causes the coral to extract the algae leaving it a bleached white color. Coral can only last a certain amount of time without the algae and then it dies, leaving it the bleached white color.
